ZONE utilises IEEE 802.11b technical standard. Also known as Wireless LAN (WLAN) or Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi), this service enables end users to surf the internet and access other web-based applications by using a Wi-Fi enabled notebook or PDA in a specified Wi-Fi areas (hotspots). IP packets are transmitted wireless, using the unlicensed 2.4GHz spectrum, between the Wi-Fi device and the access point placed in specified outlets. ZONE hotspots are located in café, restaurants, colleges, hospitals and hotels.

| To access ZONE, you are required to have the following: |
- To have a Wi-Fi compliant notebook or Personal Digital Assistant that either utilises an external PCMCIA WLAN card that is compliant to the IEEE 802.11b specification or an in-built wireless chipset such as Intel Centrino.
- To be in a ZONE hotspot.

The minimum system requirement is very much dependent on the specifications set by the different manufacturers of external WLAN cards. Please refer to these specifications. |

It is advisable to have a minimum version of 4.76 for Navigator browsers and version 5.5 for Explorer browsers. |

 |
| Using external WLAN cards : |
| Once you have purchased the required external WLAN card, you are required to perform the following. |
- Install the WLAN driver software using the installation CD bundled together with the WLAN card.
- To ensure that you are connected to ZONE wireless broadband service and able to view the ZONE login page once you have launched your internet browser, please select the Service Set Identifier (SSID) as “timezone” after the WLAN driver installation.
- If you are an Orinoco external WLAN card user, please click here for setup.
- If you have purchased a non-Orinoco WLAN card, please refer to your relevant vendor from whom you have purchased the card on how to setup the SSID.

- Go to “Start” – “Connect To” – “Wireless Network Connection”.
- Click on “Properties”.
- Click on “Wireless Networks” tab in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.
- In the Available Networks box, select “timezone” SSID. Then click on “Configure”.
- In the Association tab, ensure that the “Data Encryption” and “Network Authentication” boxes are unchecked. Click on “OK”.
- Go to “General” tab in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.
- Select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and then click on the “Properties” button.
- Check “Obtain an IP address automatically” in the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) window. Then click on “OK”.
- Click “OK” in the Wireless Network Connection Properties window.

To log out, click on the log out button. Alternatively, you will be automatically logged out if your browser is left idle for 10 minutes. |

The download and upload speed in any ZONE hotspot or any other hotspot for that matter is dependent on the following: |
- The number of users using ZONE at any one time in a hotspot.
- The type of application that users are using at any one time in a hotspot such as video streaming and downloading of content or applications.
- Distance of the user from the ZONE access point. The further the distance, the weaker the signal is i.e. lower bandwidth.
- The performance of the external or in-built WLAN card.
- A particular web server that a user wants to connect to i.e. issues on its capacity, load and link.
